Emma Pearce is Rising Star at Technology Scotland Awards

Dr Emma Pearce has been recognised for her contributions to optics and photonics at the Technology Scotland Awards.

Emma, a researcher at the UK Quantum Technology Research Hub in Sensing, Imaging and Timing, picked up the award for ‘Rising Star’ for excellence in experimental physics and outreach activities.

Emma’s research uses visible light to look at things in the infrared, exploiting quantum imaging. Her work uses entangled photons to transfer infrared image information to visible light, which can then be detected with low-cost visible sensors such as those found in our everyday phones. Emma has concentrated on targeting applications in medical diagnostics, namely breast cancer screening.

The Technology Scotland Awards, hosted at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow on 13 November, celebrated individuals and organisations that are driving innovation, global impact, and collaboration across Scotland.

The event was opened by Richard Lochead, Minister for Business, and was attended by over 250 members of the enabling technology sector in Scotland.

“I’m so honoured to receive the Rising Star award. I’m deeply grateful to the University of Glasgow and the wider Scottish technology community, who have supported my career from the start. With so many exceptional rising stars in Scotland’s technology ecosystem, it’s a privilege to be recognised among them.”
